COURSE NOTES
This year’s historic 45th anniversary race will run down the length of Mexico’s majestic Baja California peninsula. It will start in Ensenada, Baja California and finish in La Paz, Baja California Sur.
The challenging race course for this year is somewhat similar to 2010, but longer than the last time the race finished in La Paz, although the terrain has obviously changed significantly because of weather conditions and natural use.
With eight mandatory checkpoints spread down the peninsula plus the finish line, the course starts on the Pacific Ocean-side of Baja California in Ensenada and heads southeast to San Felipe on the Sea of Cortez before heading south through Coco’s Corner, Bahia de Los Angeles, San Ignacio, back to the Pacific at San Juanico, then back to the Sea of Cortez just above Loreto, back to the Pacific near Ciudad Insurgentes heading down along the Pacific through Santa Rita before turning back east and down into La Paz for the finish.
All entries are provided with GPS programs defining the course and all are required to utilize special data recording devices that plot the actual route and speeds each vehicle takes during the mammoth race.

 The bible, volume 2

Issy-les-Moulineaux, the 24th October 2012

Writing the road-book represents the main mission of the reconnoitring team, which will be finishing its work in several days’ time. It is also necessary to write another essential document devoted to safety issues.

The riders and drivers of the Dakar have their own bible: the road-book. On each stage, this document sets out via the menu all the portions of terrain that the riders and rivers must cross, the dangers to avoid, the directions to head in and the visual landmarks that help navigation. Putting this vital information down on paper is why David Castera and Etienne Lavigne survey the tracks and dunes of the rally, accompanied by the entire reconnoitring team, made up of three or four vehicles depending on the sessions. The programme of the small group’s journey in October involved checking out the last eight stages, i.e. from San Miguel de Tucuman in Argentina, to Santiago in Chile. “The average is always two days per stage, because we spend a lot of time stopping. When we are on days with split routes, which will be the case for several stages next year, we sometimes even devote three days to one single stage,” explains Castera.

Apart from the road-book, the complete works of David Castera each year also include a major opus, the safety book, which will be used during the entire rally by the organisers to respect the precise structure of the resources deployed around the route. Francisco Romero plays a central role in the drafting of this voluminous volume and, as a result, occupies the passenger seat in David Castera’s car during the most part of reconnoitring: “Unless he’s been attacked by the dunes, Francisco has already made a first journey over the terrain, both to ensure where authorisations will be needed to cross certain sectors, and to gain an idea of the places where a police presence will be necessary, for example. Afterwards, we decide together which zones we will assign to spectators or the exact places where the traffic must be stopped when the route crosses other roads”. With this new map, the Argentinean coordinator then meets the “top brass” of the forces of law and order in each country, with whom he will again gobble up the kilometres to establish the definitive needs in terms of planning, because, with Francisco, when it’s time, it’s time!

Test new air suspension 2013 Motocross Magazine

"provided that the time available in the press meeting was limited and that to give a more accurate judgment would serve more time, first impressions are not so far from a conventional fork".

"Sin a little 'fluency in the first section but on the other hand offers better support. Balancing general did not seem quite to the point. often carried in the front left high and tended to expand and also the entries were not very easy, symptoms of a slight imbalance front / rear "
Conclusion

"The feeling is that you are holding a great product and it takes just as long to find the right setting. What we can say with certainty is that the new fork air follows essentially the behavior of the traditional spring but can be easily remedied by to revolutionize the calibration without resorting to mechanical "

             Axel... and his French "cousins"

Many stories are told at the Dakar of exchanges between nations and continents. Chile's Axel Heilenkotter is the protagonist of one of them this year as he hops onto a French motorcycle out of conviction!
You could call this a multifaceted return to his roots. Like any Chilean motorcycle fan worthy of the name, Axel Heilenkotter was rocked by Carlo de Gavardo's exploits in the early 2000s and cheered on Francisco "Chaleco" López’s rise, which reached its zenith when the Dakar relocated to South America. The erstwhile runner-up in the national junior motocross championships got fully involved in the sport and came under the Prohens brothers' wings before joining the Chilean clan at the Dakar... but his family history took him to the start of the rally through a slightly unexpected path.
His frequent visits to motor sport events reminded Axel of his French ancestors’ major role in this field as the official importers of the Citroën brand in Chile. "When I went to the Dakar bivouac I found out there was a French constructor in the race. It caught my attention straight away, so I travelled to France to see them again. I thought of my great-grandfather and my grandfather and, in some way, I followed in their footsteps by becoming Sherco's distributor in Chile", explains this jack of all trades who also works as a marketing manager at Hewlett-Packard. The most French of the Chilean pilots laid the groundwork for his Dakar debut by sitting at the wheel of the team's assistance truck during the last edition. Now, he is ready to pin a race number onto his back and hop onto a motorcycle: "A Sherco, of course! And reaching Santiago is all that's on my mind."
                  New presentation  BETA 300cc  250cc  2013
The introduction of new engines in the range 2T RR Enduro is one of the highlights of the history of the house Tuscany, after the return to the Enduro category in 2004 and the introduction of the 4-stroke engine "made in Beta" in 2009. These engines are the result of a work that lasted more than 24 months, were entirely designed by Beta. Available in 250cc and 300cc displacements are manufactured, assembled and tested in-house, to ensure their quality and performance.

 ENGINE
- Available in 250cc and 300cc displacement, presents measures characteristic bore and stroke of 66.4 x 72mm and 72 x 72mm that represent the best compromise to get the correct inertia and then an engine with good torque.
- Carter made by die-casting, to obtain lightness and stiffness simultaneously. Are processed entirely in-house to ensure quality and accuracy.
- Lids magnesium, allow to minimize the total weight of the engine.
- Crankshaft subdivided, with polyamide inserts for proper balance and eliminate the harmful volume in the sump pump. The solution allows to obtain the best balance between inertia and mass.
- Forged piston to hold the weight of the reciprocating masses is equipped with 2 bands.
- Cylinder obtained by die-casting with the Nikasil treated barrel. L 'inclination is 90 ° to have a more compact engine and masses close to the center of gravity of the motorcycle. The geometry of the light has been the subject of a long process of design, analysis and fluid dynamics simulations, as well as a long set-up at the counter and on the bike for delivery characteristics and maximum power that make this engine the new reference the category. Furthermore the cylinder was equipped with resonator to improve delivery at low speeds and have an engine always ready and manageable even in the most demanding routes.
- Head monolithic geometry of the combustion chamber designed to obtain the best compromise between the recall readiness gas and extension.
- Electric starter located under the engine, confirming a layout that from the beginning has taken into account the requirement.
- Valve exhaust system with BPV (Beta Progressive Valve). The kinematics of the exhaust valve has been designed to have an opening progressive and independent of the main exhaust port and booster. This allows to have a greater linearity of response of the motor and the absence of holes in the torque curve, in addition to performance of maximum absolute value. The ability to manage the rpm at which the valve opens, allowing you to customize the behavior of the engine according to driving style and road conditions.
- Carburetor Keihin PWK 36, the highest quality for performance and ease of reference 's manual.
- 6-speed gearbox, designed to provide extreme reliability combined with great ease in the grafts in all conditions of use.
- Reed "VForce4", equipped with stopper for greater reliability without compromise to performance.
- Exhaust steel and aluminum silencer made by the American FMF. Were defined after extensive road tests and their geometry has been optimized for fluid delivery without sacrificing power.
- Control and power Kokusan.

CHASSIS

- Frame derived from the 4T but with specific geometry for maximum performance in terms of handling and stability. As of version 4T 2013, this frame is derived from the experience acquired models Factory and has the same lightness and strength.
- Wheels particularly light due to brake discs with a new profile, very strict with 6
points of attachment to the hub, made of high quality steel, allow a braking modular and extremely effective. Hubs and lightweight at the same time very rigid. Circles with a dedicated profile, particularly resistant to stresses and at the same time very light. Ray Tubes specific special reading, a further reduction of the masses.
A total weight of the wheels particularly low and therefore a tremendous benefit in terms of ease in changing direction, acceleration and greater efficiency during braking.
 - Swingarm made with a technology that allows the minimum thickness, rigidity and optimized weight distribution.
- Sachs fork Ø 48 mm with completely new internal parts and springs K 4.2. This allows a perfect control of the hydraulic part which results in a better absorption of shocks and hence a greater ease of driving in the most extreme conditions. In addition, the adjustment of the rebound damping is now through an external registry positioned above the fork body.
- Rear shock absorber with dedicated calibration, spring K 4.8 and expansion tank increased to provide better control of the hydraulics, cooling and therefore more stable performance. The body of the shock absorber is made of aluminum allowing a saving of weight of 300 grams compared to the equivalent steel.
- Tank designed to ensure a better centering of weight and therefore stability when changing direction of motion. The shape lowered in the area of the cap provides a better ergonomics, while the total capacity turns out to be of 8 liters.
- Tank cap with a shape which facilitates the operations of opening and closing and with external thread to avoid that dirt may enter the tank at the time of its mounting.
- Saddle with a lateral profile and a section that allow a great ease of movement, for a better control of the bike in all circumstances.
- Fixing saddle that makes it very easy to release but prevents extreme conditions of use of the bike or because of extreme impacts from coming loose.
- Side panels with a design that allows for great flow and a substantial circulation in the area around the head of the engine. This shape also gives a very slender line to the motorcycle and in practice make it very easy both the position in the saddle that any maintenance / control in the upper part of the engine.
- Grids radiator with an optimized shape for directing a greater flow of air towards the radiators, and then stabilize the engine cooling under extreme conditions of use.
- Instrumentation light, with a large display size. In addition, the indicators lights and turn signals are
integrated, for improved ergonomics of the area of the handlebar.
- Subframe designed to better support the license plate and to facilitate the replacement of the rear shock.
- Door plate stiffened by ribs, to enable the use of license plates also more bulky and heavy.
- Chain DID for improved smoothness and quality of reference.
- Skid plate made of plastic material, lighter and "sliding" over the obstacles typical paths Enduro.
- Stand obtained by forging, in order to obtain a particularly rigid at the same time lightweight.
The RR ENDURO 2T 2013 will be available from the month of October, from the network of official dealers Beta with the following prices:

Interview with Marc Coma after accident in Moròc Rally

"I'm happy, after the exam, because the diagnosis is better than we expected after the incident and I will be able to recover quickly. This alters a little 'our program for the preparation of the Dakar, but I'm in a good mood and happy to be able to participate. Now I have to keep my concentration, because I commit myself to do a good cardiovascular work with my physiotherapist. The prediction is that there should not be any problem to fully recover within a few weeks. "
